The latest issue of Eye Health Research Review has been published. In this issue, a fascinating study shows that a non-invasive deep learning model, using retinal images combined with demographic risk factors, can predict bronchopulmonary dysplasia and pulmonary hypertension in premature infants. The model using retinal images outperformed the standard approach of using demographic data alone, offering a potential non-invasive alternative to high-risk diagnostic procedures.

Some of the other highlights in this review include:

  • Increased risk of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy with semaglutide versus SGLT2 inhibitors
  • Higher risks of glaucoma and glaucoma surgery in myopic and highly myopic eyes
  • High yield of systemic workup in patients with paracentral acute middle maculopathy

I hope you find these and the other selected studies interesting and of clinical value, and look forward to bringing you more updates throughout 2026.
